Parnngurr School Wins NAB Schools First Impact Award
Parnngurr School Wins NAB Schools First Impact Award

In this remote part of WA, the Parnngurr Community School has a unique partnership with the Martu People, an Indigenous charitable trust in the Pilbara. The Martu Charitable Trust is funded by mining royalties and aims to improve the wellbeing of Martu people.
After years of failure with standard educational programs the partners believed that self help, local knowledge and control and ownership could be the keys to success. A unique educational program was developed and, in just a few years, school attendance leapt from 50% to 84%. Instead of students taking four years to achieve one year of learning, they are now advancing in literacy outcomes at the same rate as their mainstream peers. This direction was heavily influenced by advice from the Martu People on ways to motivate and inspire the students to become more engaged in learning. The new literacy program which included participation in football, and involved the Swan Districts Football Club and AFL Schools, has led to better literacy outcomes. The Martu Charitable Trust has shown how mining royalty money can be used to improve Indigenous life opportunities.
What the judges said:
This partnership is to be commended for the successful outcomes already evident since the project was introduced. There is substantial evidence of the impact the program is having on students and partners. The project will also have benefits as a role model for other schools in the Pilbarra region and the partnership is to be highly commended for this.
